8.         Description                : Research Method is a study of how to do some research. Research is systematic process includes data

collection and analysis of information in improving our understanding of the phenomena want or a concern we

Research  related question or human curiosity and attempt to find answers to these questions. Various

research purpose is exploration, description, prediction, explanation, action. In general, based on the

concepts of wrong about  the research, it should be highlighted four as follows : (1).the research not only

collect information (2). Research not only move the facts from one place to another (3). Research is not just

shuffle through ti find  information (4). Research is not a great word to attract attention.

9..        Competent                : Student are expected  be able to about  research method, terminology, sample, population,  systematic

(nonsampling), error from sample, statistic analysis, probability and nonprobability sampling, the normal

distribution, primary research, testing the null hypothesis.

Population

  • Population defined
  • Tehnical the population is the complete set of elements of interest
  • We think of univariate, bevariate or multivariate population
  • What makes good sample
  • precision

3

Errors from investigating a sample

  • Nonsampling (systematic) error
  • Sampling frame error
  • Non-response error
  • Response or recording error
  • Sampling (rendom) error
  • Two determinants of sampling error
  • Sampling unit (multi-stage sampling : primary, secondary, tertiary sampling units)

Mary Ellen Guffey,Kathleen Rhodes,

Patricia Rogin.

4

Two major categories of sampling

Nonprobability sampling

  • Convenience
  • Judgment
  • Quota
  • Snowball

Probality sampling

  • Simple ramdom sample
  • Systematic sample
  • Stratified sample
  • Cluster sample
  • Multistage cluster sample

5

Statistical analisys of sample

Descriptive statistic

  • Measure of central tendecy
  • Measure of dispersion
  • Measure of frquency
  • Often presented in a table

Ususaly some brief discussion of the descriptive statistics

  • Give the reader some idea
  • Give the reader a feel for the scale of the data
  • Give information about the amount of variation
6

Measure Of Dispersion Or spread

  • Range
  • Mean absolute deviation
  • Variance
  • Standard deviation
  • Low dispersion Vs High Dispersion
  • Deviation scores
  • Average deviaton
  • Mean squared deviation
  • Sample variance
  • Variance

Inferenstial statistics

Inferential statistic definedDistribution

  • Population distribution-frequency distrbution of element in population
  • Sample distrbution-frequency distrbution of elelemt in sample
  • Sampling distribution – theoretical distribution of a sample statistic in repeated sampling
  • Population distribution curve
  • Sample distribution curve
  • Sampling distribution curve

The Normal Dsitribution

  • Normal distribution
  • Normal curve
  • Standardized normal distribution
  • Standar curve
  • The standardized normal is distribution of z
  • Population standar scores
  • Standaridized value

Centrla limit theorem

The CLT  says that sample size -n-is large

  • An average across repeated sample
  • The variance of the sample mean across different
  • The distribution of sample is normal
  • Population parameters and sample statistic (population, sample, sampling)

Mary Ellen Guffey,

Kathleen Rhodes,

Patricia Rogin.

11

Simple statistical test

  • SST :many research question can be addressed with very simple statistical
  • Often a good research design leads to a simple test, while a bad design requires complex statistical procedur for analysis of the data
  • Sine many classic research question imply a comparison between group, the two sample
  • (or multiple-sample) test are especially useful.

Overview

Test cicering population means

  • One sample test
  • Two independent samples test
  • K > 2 independent samples.
  • Matched sample

Test concerning population proportion

  • One sample
  • More general test

15

Testing The Null Hypothesis

  • The test can be conducted by computing the t-statistic (note one sample size is less than 30) manually
  •  Can be conducted automatically using statistic software, or excel
  • Excel :tools, (t-test,two sample test assuming equal variance)
